Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

"In Review" status for items with editor decisions

Postby eblwelch » Fri Apr 18, 2014 4:29 am

Hi folks,
I've searched everywhere and can't find any information on the following. Submissions with editor decisions of "Revisions Required" and "Resubmit for Review" remain in the "In Review" queue even though they in fact await author action (revision/resubmission). This is problematic for several reasons. First, it misleads the author who might think no action is necessary if the e-mail communicating the decision went into his/her e-mail spam folder. Second, these items clog up the editor's "In Review" queue. Third, there is no trigger to alert author or editor that a deadline for revision/resubmission has passed and prompt a change of decision to reject. It just sits there forever. Am I missing something? Is there a solution or maybe this is something that could be worked on for the 3.x?
Many thanks!

Hi James,

The submission is technically "in review" even throughout communication with the author; it moves out of review when it is either accepted or rejected. You can use the envelope icon to contact the author, after a "revisions required" decision has been recorded, to let them know that something needs doing. There are no deadlines for authors to upload revisions -- the only deadlines currently implemented in the system, subscriptions aside, are for reviewers to perform reviews.

Dear Alec,
Thanks for your thorough response. This scenerio is not ideal, but at least now I know the limitations of the system. If there is space in the suggestion box, I'd like to propose implementing a new status "Awaiting revisions" with an accompanying deadline & automatic reminder similar to that used for reviews. Since many journals allow 3 months or more for revisions, but not forever, this would help keep the "In Review" list limited to items actually in review in terms of workflow. This status is used by many other editorial systems (for example Editorial Manager, BMC, PLOS) and is very useful for both authors and editors.
Thanks for your consideration.
