One or more OJS installations?

Are you an Editor, Author, or Journal Manager in need of help? Want to talk to us about workflow issues? This is your forum.

Forum rules
This forum is meant for general questions about the usability of OJS from an everyday user's perspective: journal managers, authors, and editors are welcome to post questions here, as are librarians and other support staff. We welcome general questions about the role of OJS and how the workflow works, as well as specific function- or user-related questions.

What to do if you have general, workflow or usability questions about OJS:

1. Read the documentation. We've written documentation to cover from OJS basics to system administration and code development, and we encourage you to read it.

2. take a look at the tutorials. We will continue to add tutorials covering OJS basics as time goes on.

3. Post a question. Questions are always welcome here, but if it's a technical question you should probably post to the OJS Technical Support subforum; if you have a development question, try the OJS Development subforum.

One or more OJS installations?

Postby Karolin » Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:02 am

Dear all,

we are testing OJS at the moment and are going to offer OJS and service around it as a new service to the people at our university. We already received several enquiries for hosting journals and this seems to be perfect.

Although I know that OJS is thought to be a multi-journal system I wonder whether it might be useful to have independent OJS installations for each journal e.g. because of plug-ins. On the other hand I know it's a lot of work to do with several installations, the updates etc.

It would be very useful to get feedback from OJS-users who are more experienced than we are ;-).

Thanks a lot in advance and best wishes from Germany

Hi Karolin,

In case you haven't run into it yet, there's a FAQ entry on this subject.

Hi Alec,

I have a question on permissions in case of many journals on the same OJS installation. Assume you have Journal A and Journal B, with Journal managers JMA and JMB.
Both journals share the same database of users. However JMB has no right on users enrolled in B, but previously enrolled in A. Often JMB has to log in as a user to perform some action or correct some action of the user. JMB cannot do it without rights.
Is there a way that the administrator of the ojs installation gives, with agreement of JMs, rights to JMs of A and B on all users of the common database ?
Thank you for your help.

Best
Claude

Hi Claude,

Will there be cases in which a journal manager will not grant permission? One option, if you simply want to avoid the check, is to have both JM accounts also enrolled as Site Administrators.
