Alphabetizing users with names containing accented character

Postby osborne » Wed Jun 14, 2006 7:51 pm

I have modified the list of users (for the journal administrator) to be alphabetical by last name, but 'order by last_name' in the MySQL (version 5) query doesn't treat accented characters correctly. I guess I don't have the character sets specified correctly. I've looked at the MySQL manual and searched previous posts, but haven't found an answer.

Specifically, the name 'Börgers', which is stored in the database as 'Börgers' (but appears correctly on the web pages), is ordered between Battigalli and Becker. In config.inc.php I have
client_charset = utf-8
Is there an easy solution? Do I need to convert the database table somehow?

Hi Martin,

You'll have to enable the connection_charset and database_charset options in config.inc.php. This requires MySQL >= 4.1.1 or PostgreSQL >= 7.1.

Additionally, the next release of OJS will contain alphalists as a locale string, so you'll be able to jump to accented characters as well if (a) you add them to the alphalist and (b) you have the options above enabled.
