Feature Request: SEF and accented URLs

Postby georgeKapsomenos » Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:55 pm

It would be nice to have PKP Software not include "index.php" as well as support accented letters and language glyphs in the URLs as a further move towards localization.
I don't know how much difference this makes to the search engines, but it does improve user experience for speakers of languages which use accents and glyphs, by making the urls more meaningful and, thus, more memorable.

Hi George,

You should be able to remove the "index.php" from the URL by following the instructions here: http://pkp.sfu.ca/wiki/index.php/PKP_Fr ... es_URLs.3F. I'm not familiar with whether or how web applications handle accented glyphs in URL strings -- can you provide more detail, or possibly even a few examples?

Cheers,
James

Hi James...

Unfortunately, I have requests but no knowledge or actual suggestions on how localized URLs could be achieved...I can only point you to the files/patch that I have used for Joomla, if that can help at all...
Here http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... /sef/10275
and here http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=18915

Thanks once again

Hi George,

Thanks for the extra info -- I have added a feature request here: http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6400. Please feel free to CC yourself to that request!

Cheers,
James

Hi. I am using joomla for my website and I need to include symbols used in the Spanish language in the URLs. Do you know how I can apply these mods that you included? I have been all over the web trying to figure this out, and I think you are kind of talking about this, but I am not totally sure. If you know foreign languages, like French or Spanish, they have some symbols, like accent marks, and n with a tilda on the top. Is this something that can be done?

PS sorry about the fact that my question is kind of confusing, English is not my first language, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
