PDF Label in different languages

Postby Almadl » Tue Jan 24, 2012 6:44 am

Hi all,
my name is Andrea and I work for Almadl, digital library of University of Bologna.
As a service, we provide a multi-journal installation of OJS (currently 2.3.2),
and we have 14 journals so far (http://journals.unibo.it/riviste/).

Many of our editorial teams ask us the same question:
is it possible to upload articles in a different language, from those selected as default?
For example, many journals are in EN-IT, with EN as default language,
but sometimes (rarely) they receive articles in French.

The perennial problem is always that the PDF laber, shown in the TOC,
is not customizable, and the 2 allowed languages are just EN-IT.

As I understood (and tried several times), the only way to have another language is to
add in the UI section, in Journal Manager > Language, but this is a too much,
it is not easy to manage a journal with several languages (and all the help and About pages).

I understand this has been brought to attention other times
(for example: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5182 )
but I still don't find a solution.
Thank you very much for your support.

Andrea

Hello Andrea,

I would suggest upgrading to 2.3.6 as soon as possible.
However, that won't affect the possible solution.

When uploading "galleys", you can customize the label as you see fit.
What OJS does is bring the PDF/HTML or whatever label PHP detects from the file format.
You are able to upload any file in any language, independently of the UI language.

The problem is that you'll have to upload the same file, as many times as you have additional languages in your UI (so that users can read all article versions available in all languages).

Or you can customize the code to display all galleys, independently of the UI language.
I believe there are a few topics related to this in the forum, but I can't confirm if there is a code for this, if it's difficult or not to implement.

H, thanks for your reply.

I know, but if I upload one PDF file in FR, and I have only EN-IT as UI languages, there is no way I can label the language PDF (Francais).
I always have to choose between EN and IT. So, if I manually write PDF (Francais), I still have to choose EN or IT, so in one language it will be displayed OK, in the other it will have 2 labes: PDF (Francais) (English) if I choose EN, PDF (Francais) (Italian) if i choose IT.

Or you can customize the code to display all galleys, independently of the UI language.
I believe there are a few topics related to this in the forum, but I can't confirm if there is a code for this, if it's difficult or not to implement.

If there is a patch or something, I'll be eager to know where is it.
This is a major issue for us, because almost every journal sometimes
wnats to upload an article in a different language.

Moreover, this happens also with abstract, in the sense that we have journals with complete different behaviours:
some are in EN only, but publish two abstract in EN, and IT; some viceversa;
one is in EN only, but publish the abstract in 6 (1!) languages...

I know they are two different technical issues,
but the problem of internalization maybe would require more flexibility of OJS regarding
languages.

Anyway, really thanks for the help.

Hello Almadl,

Check this bugzilla entry.
It seems to do what you need.

I found this: http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6772
and I think it is exactly what I tried to mean.
We'll try this.
