email and smtp setting

Hi All,
i apologize for my bad English. I have recently installed the last version 2.3.1.2 of OJS to manage a multilingual website. I configured the email to smtp with server data (smtp server, port, username and password) that works in another university website and provided by the server administrator. but it does not work with OJS. I had tested also Gmail but it does not send any mail from OJS. The server uses PHP version 5.2.1. Can you help please to make the outgoing mails work? thanks

try looking at my OJS configuration settings from config.inc.php.

smtp On
smtp_server yyyyy.xxx.zz
smtp_port 25
enable_attachments On
time_between_emails 3600
max_recipients 10
require_validation Off
validation_timeout 14
