PKP Workshop in Bogotá

The series of PKP workshops in Latin America continued on November 13th, 2007, at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. This workshop, organized by PKP, the Universidad Nacional, the Universidad Javeriana, and the Universidad de la Sabana was the largest workshop in the series so far. 150 participants were present at the Centro de convenciones Alfonso López Pumarejo in Bogotá. The workshop was also broadcast via teleconference to the Universidad Nacional in Medellín (22 participants), the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla (5 participants), and to the Universidad de Manizales in Manizales (4 participants).

The program (in spanish) gave participants a range of experiences from other Colombian journals and gave the two sponsoring universities an opportunity to communicate directly with existing and potential members of the publishing community. Dr. Carlos Agudelo, from SciELO Colombia also gave an update on the achievements of SciELO Colombia and on the steps journals need to take to participate in SciELO.

The event was very well received and participants from all locations actively participated in a lively debate to close off the day. Questions were raised regarding a wide variety of topics, including:

• PKP's role in Latin America. Incredulous participants could not believe PKP provides services for free!
• Editors were concerned about the legal implications of publishing online. There is a need for additional information to be disseminated regarding this important topic.
• A wide range of technical questions regarding the capabilities of OJS

The PKP team also took the opportunity to meet independently with SciELO Colombia and Colciencias to discuss ways of collaborating into the future.

Taller de PKP en Bogotá

La serie de talleres de PKP en Latinoamerica continuo el 13 de Noviembre, 2007, en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. El taller, organizado por PKP, la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana y la Universidad de la Sabana fue el taller más grande de la serie, por ahora. 150 participantes estuvieron presentes en el Centro de convenciones Alfonso López Pumarejo en Bogotá. El taller fue transmitido por teleconferencia a la Sede Medellín - Universidad Nacional (22 participants), a la Universidad del Norte en Barranquilla (5 participants), y a la Universidad de Manizales in Manizales (4 participants).

El programa ofreció experiencias de revistas colombianas y le dio la oportunidad a las dos universidades de comunicarse directamente con miembros de la comunidad cientifica que esta actualmente publicando o que esta pensando en hacerlo. Dr. Carlos Agudelo, de SciELO Colombia tambien tuvo la oportunidad de informar a los editores y bibliotecarios de los avances de SciELO y de los pasos a seguir para que una revista sea incluida en SciELO.

El evento fue muy bien recibido y los participantes en todas las ciudades participaron en un debate que sirvió para cerrar la jornada. Se hicieron preguntas sobre amplios temas, incluyendo:

• el rol de PKP's en Latinoamerica. Los participantes no podían creer que los servicios de PKP se ofrezcan gratuitamente.
• Editores expresaron una preocupación sobre las implicaciones legales de publicar en linea. Se identifico la necesidad de diseminar más información sobre este tema.
• Se hicieron todo tipo de preguntas técnicas sobre las capacidades de OJS.

El equipo PKP aprovecho la oportunidad en Colombia para reunirse con SciELO Colombia y Colciencias en los días siguientes al evento para hablar de maneras de colaborar e investigar juntos.
