PKP Bugzilla – Bug 5951
Register as Reader - should it be mandatory when registering?

We are moving to Git Issues for bug tracking in future releases. During transition, content will be in both tools. If you'd like to file a new bug, please create an issue.
Just met with an editor today and he brought something up that I thought I'd share.
It seems that folks are sometimes "unclicking" the Reader checkbox when they register. What results is a whole bunch of users are registered with the "site" but not the journal. This is manageable if you're hosting only one journal per instance, but if you're looking at many journals with thousands of users, this can be a problem.
The editor had a list of 25 subscribers that had "unclicked Reader when registering". While I did show him how to search for known users and add them to the journal as readers, he asked me if there was any way I could tell him which of the "site-only" registered users had tried to register with his journal. I was sorry to not be able to help him with that.
In light of this use case, I'm wondering if we should just make it always happen in the background that when someone registers with a journal that they are automatically a Reader?
I did a temporary hack of the ojs\templates\user\register.tpl to make this happen by changing input type to hidden and commenting out the label, but I'm sure there's a more elegant solution.
Would this be something to consider? Maybe I'm not able to think of a use case to the contrary?
