Description Ivo Welch 2010-08-04 12:25:23 PDT
I have not found clear bugs...so these are just suggestions. It seems very polished. As a new user, these are some of the curiosities that I wanted to describe:

* would it make sense to allow a file upload (and download) to edit various long text files? I do like your sophisticated text fields, but a secondary choice of uploading would be nice, too. (

* After I set up my journal, I wanted to look at it, then go back to the site administration functions. This was not easy to find. Where is it? (I eventually found it on the Site Map -> Site Administrator -> Site Settings.

* I can't figure out how to choose a set of roles for people. That is, I don't have section editors, but I have associate editors.

Suggestion for Version 2.4.: It would be nice if the information were stored in in an XML or other text format, so that one can use a standard text editor to change it, too?

"would it make sense to allow a file upload (and download) to edit various long text files? I do like your sophisticated text fields, but a secondary choice of uploading would be nice, too."

Could you describe further how this would look, with a specific example? If you mean e.g. article abstracts, then we already have a Bugzilla entry in place for this (in OCS, though it would apply to OJS too).

"After I set up my journal, I wanted to look at it, then go back to the site
administration functions. This was not easy to find. Where is it? (I
eventually found it on the Site Map -> Site Administrator -> Site Settings."

In OJS since around version 2.3.1, the User Home link will always show the Site Administrator link.

"I can't figure out how to choose a set of roles for people. That is, I don't
have section editors, but I have associate editors."

The set of roles for OJS is fixed; we are working with flexible roles in OMP, and this feature may eventually make it back into OJS.

"It would be nice if the information were stored in in an XML or other text format, so that one can use a standard text editor to change it, too?"

Do you mean information like article abstracts and metadata? An XML store wouldn't be fast enough; I'd suggest working with the import/export tools for offline editing, or a database admin tool like phpMyAdmin if you need online editing functionality.

I've read some of the discussion about flexible roles on http://pkp.sfu.ca/wiki/index.php/Authorization_Framework and it seems like a good idea to me.

Our use case is for OJS: we'd like to allow section editors to edit the prepared emails corresponding to their duties (for example, section editors for reviews can edit the emails associated with book reviews). Right now this must be handled by the journal manager. It would be nice to be able to assign section editors the ability to edit prepared emails -- or even to edit "their" emails.

For now, I plan to work around this issue by making everyone journal managers. That's okay for a small outfit like us, but obviously not the best for larger staffs.
