We're very pleased to learn that the California Digital Library's eScholarship service is using OJS. They are doing tremendous work and it is great to have OJS being part of that.

The V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the largest library in Ukraine, a research institution of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, one of the main scientific information centers of the Eastern Europe and one of the top 20 world's largest libraries. The library is a provider and adopter of the national open access policies of Ukraine, is the nationwide holder and online publisher of all scientific serials and theses, and is financed by the State budget of Ukraine.

As of the end of December 2011, we have discovered over 11,500 OJS installations from around the world:

We're continuing to see strong growth internationally, with OJS being used for traditional journals, but also for reports, learning management systems, courses, monographs, and variety of interesting projects.

The OJS Userguide has now been translated into Spanish! The translation was coordinated by our partners at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and is available in HTML and PDF (PDF is 21MB).

This is a significant contribution to the PKP documentation effort, and will be of immediate use to many, many members of the PKP community worldwide. A full attribution, in Spanish, is as follows:

One of the results of the recent THATCamp Publishing day in Baltimore was the creation of a new Google Group for libraries offering publishing services. It has been designed to be a kind of community of practice, where we can share ideas, support one another, and learn. The discussions have already begun!

The Public Knowledge Project is pleased to announce several positive outcomes from the PKP2011 Scholarly Publishing Conference Hackfest. A conference Hackfest is an opportunity to network with developers and cooperate on small projects of mutual interest. Themes for this Hackfest included Social Networking, Open Reviews, Liquid Publishing, and Integration & Interoperability.

Participation was lower than expected, but the PKP development team, Simon Fraser University, the University of New Brunswick, and the Free University of Berlin were represented, along with several new faces.

Today we would like to draw your attention to the upcoming PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference 2011 which will take place in just about one month from now.

The Third International PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference will be held from September 26 - 28, 2011 at Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, organized by the Public Knowledge Project, in partnership with Freie Universitaet Berlin and Simon Fraser University Library.

Registration is still possible and there are still a few places available.

The University of Murcia (Spain) is now providing the 3d edition of a course, in Spanish, on using Open Journal Systems in a scholarly publishing environment. Titled Electronic Publishing of Scholar Journals with Open Journal Systems (OJS), the course will explore the current issues surrounding the electronic publishing of scholar journals, and will fully explore the web application OJS.

The course is taught online in a virtual learning environment, and so is open to anyone in the world. Students must have Internet access and an email account for its completion.

The PKP team is happy to announce that the release of OCS 2.3.4 is almost here.

OCS 2.3.4 includes over 85 bug fixes since OCS 2.3.3-1 and is intended as a stable upgrade or install.

If you are planning to upgrade to OCS 2.3.4, we'd appreciate your help in testing the updated, second release candidate (RC2) package during the next two weeks.

Any feedback or issues encountered with real-world data would be greatly appreciated.
