Peter Suber is pointing to a great new resource for OA publishers. With titles like "Best Practices Guide to Open Access Journals Publishing" (from our friends at Co-Action), you might want to take a look.

If your journal is located in Canada, and is in the social sciences or humanities, you'll want to check out SSHRC's Aid to Scholarly Journals page -- with up to $30,000 in annual funding!

If you are using OJS and are awarded some SSHRC funding, we'd love to hear about it.

The University of Alberta Libraries provides another great example of libraries becoming more directly involved in the scholarly publishing process on their campus. They are offering repository (DSpace), conference (OCS), and journal (OJS) publishing services.

Be sure to check out their Memorandum of Agreement between the library and the journals.

The list of related links in the sidebar is also very useful. Nice job.

The speakers will include John and MJ from PKP, as well as many members of the Australian PKP community.

It is outstanding to see this group developing, and we hope that it will inspire others to set something similar up in their own countries.

The Scientific Dissemination Unit of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics has released a free online book, Science Dissemination Using Open Access. It includes sections from various PKP documents, as well as many others.

It provides a single source for anyone new to open access issues, as well as outlining some important practical steps in moving forward (such as using OJS!).

If you haven't seen Health and Human Rights: An International Journal yet, you should definitely take a look. It is a wonderful example of taking the OJS framework and customizing it into something quite beautiful. Nice work, folks!

The PKP Team has created a new document specific to OCS and OJS: The OxS Quick Reference.

This reference document covers common system tasks for both OCS and OJS. It includes instructions on: installing and configuring the software on a server; publishing content; and practicing necessary server administration tasks (making backups, upgrading, troubleshooting, etc.). It also includes additional material useful for developers who are looking to make additions and modifications to the code.

Interested in getting a sneak preview of the upcoming changes in OJS 2.2.1? Want to get a head start on installing the new files on your system? If so, please join the OJS 2.2.1 testing team and put the latest version of OJS through its paces!

As part of ensuring that this new version of OJS is ready for general release, we would like to ask you to consider volunteering to do some testing of the software. The testing will take place over a two week period, beginning today (June 13, 2008).

An OJS promoter and an academic sat down for a coffee. The academic had recently started an OJS journal but didn’t seem to have the same excitement as the OJS promoter.

"Isn’t it great! Its so easy to start a journal with OJS!" the OJS promoter said with a radiating glee.

"I suppose it easy to start a journal with OJS" the academic replied half-heartedly. "But, let me tell you about the time it takes to run a journal properly...".

The Public Knowledge Project is very pleased to announce our partnership with the Athabasca University Press to develop the new Open Monograph Press electronic publishing platform. Proposed features include an incubation site where authors can blog ideas; online composition tools to create text and related resources; and an interactive publication site that will support reader comment and other input.

Bobby Graham at the National Library of Australia pointed me to some PKP-related content in the latest issue of the Journal of Electronic Publishing (vol 11, iss 2).

In particular, check out Julian Fisher's article on the "real costs and real freedoms" in scholarly publishing and Colin Steele's work on monograph publishing.

Lots of other very good stuff here too (as usual).

In addition to the publishing resources described on an earlier blog, we are also interested in an your experiences in publishing -- what worked, what didn't, what was particularly challenging and how you overcame it, etc. These can be as long or as brief as you wish.

These stories would be of interest to anyone new to the field of publishing and would also promote PKP more broadly.

If we get enough of a response from the community, we would consider creating a "PKP Journal" to publish these shared experiences on a regular basis.
